Policemen from Zone 5, Intelligence Unit, Benin, Edo State, have arrested Kelvin Osagie (28), who allegedly masterminded the kidnap of his grandmother, Mrs. Victor Aiwerioghene.
According to a police report, the suspect in collusion with others abducted the woman from her home in Ikpoba Hill area of the state capital, in July 2011.
It further said Osagie’s arrest was made possible following information obtained by the police from one of the kidnappers, Fred Omoruyi, who was earlier arrested.
Omoruyi was charged to court on two counts of alleged kidnap and conspiracy to commit felony.
The accused reportedly fingered Osagie as the mastermind of his paternal grandmother’s kidnap.
Omoruyi, according to police sources, confessed to the crime, saying Osagie contacted him and another suspect who is still at large to execute the plot.
“The police went after the said Kelvin Osagie, got him arrested and will charge him to court after investigation must have been concluded,” a statement by the police on Thursday stated.
The statement by the Zone 5 spokesperson, Titilope Otukoya, added that the police were still searching for the other members of the gang.
Aiwerioghene was said to have been kept in a wardrobe for six days after her kidnap, before she was rescued by the police.
